The warmer weather is here to stay, which means more people are flooding to ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappto take part in the plethora of recreation activities on offer here.

From climbing the endless rock faces, to hiking and biking the large trail system, to paddling along the waters of the many lakes and river systems, ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappreally has it all.

But the importance of recreating safely cannot be stressed enough.

The Sea to Sky RCMP–Squamish, District of ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappand ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappSearch and Rescue all issued reminders to residents and visitors to prioritize safety while enjoying the outdoors.

“ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappis known for its outdoor recreation activities, and every year thousands venture into the area’s stunning natural landscapes. While these activities offer incredible experiences, they also come with risks—especially when adventurers are unprepared or overconfident,” reads a press release from the Sea to Sky RCMP.

In the press release, Mayor Armand Hurford said the District always encourages residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors safely, but also smartly too. 

“We can’t stress enough to always be prepared and approach the area you are visiting with the utmost caution and preparation no matter what your outdoor skill level is, or how popular the area is, or even how close to town the area is,” he said. 

“If you are visiting or recreating in any location outdoors; learn the risks, plan ahead, prepare, be safe, and come home.”

So what are some safety tips you can learn before heading out on your outdoor adventure?

1. Know Before You Go: Check weather and trail conditions, and ensure your planned route matches your skill and fitness level.

2. Tell Someone: Always leave a trip plan with a friend or family member, including your route and estimated return time.

3. Pack Smart: Bring essentials such as a map, GPS or compass, flashlight, food, water, first aid kit, extra clothing, and emergency supplies.

4. Dress for Conditions: Weather can change quickly in the mountains. Dress in layers and bring waterproof gear.

5. Stay Connected: Cell coverage is limited in some areas. Consider carrying a satellite communication device like an InReach or SPOT.

6. Respect the Environment: Follow Leave No Trace principles and be bear aware.
