2015 Youth Tri is on

Volunteers stepped up to fill organizing positions just in time to save this year’s event

Volunteers stepped up, just in the nick of time,

At a Nov. 20 meeting of the organizing committee for the 15th annual ƵappYouth Triathlon, key positions were filled, thus ensuring the race is a go for this year.

Just last week outgoing race-director Mike Hedberg said he feared for the future of this year’s Mother’s Day event because the committee was short at least five volunteers for key positions, including race director.

At the Thursday night meeting at the Howe Sound Brewing Company it was determined the role of race-director will be shared between Carole O’Brennan, an experienced volunteer returning organizing member, and Sarah Ruttan, a new recruit, according to Hedberg.

Other volunteers stepped in to take the other vacant positions — volunteer coordinator, website manager, registrar and treasurer — but Hedberg said he did not want to announce the names just yet as roles were still being cemented.

“It is great to see the community of Ƶappcome together to support this 100 per cent volunteer-run event,” he said. “This is another great example of why many of us would not consider living in any other community.”

Last year, around 222 kids aged four to 15 took part in the event that saw the young athletes swim, bike and run to the finish line.

Registration for the 2015 triathlon will get underway this January. Check out squamishyouthtri.ca in the New Year.
