The winning streak is over for the Howe Sound Cannons, but they managed to get a win over the defending champion Reds before the week was done.
Howe Sound kicked off a three-game set against the Reds on Thursday (May 15) and dropped a 3-2 decision. The setback was the Cannons’ first loss in the 2014 North Shore Men’s Baseball Association (NSMBA) regular season.
Action continued on Saturday (May 24) with a doubleheader in North Vancouver and Howe Sound sent Jack Thompson to the mound for Game 1.
It turned out to be a long affair as the game turned into a 10-inning battle with the Reds picking up a 4-3 win. Thompson pitched all 10 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and fanning 10 Reds batters. Matty Taylor led the Cannons with two hits.
For Game 2, the Cannons called Alex “Slumpbuster” Wishy to the bump to snap the Cannons’ two-game slide. Wishy pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and left the game with a 3-2 lead.
The Cannons added four runs in the top of the seventh, buoyed by scoring base hits from Wishy and Tor Purvis. Jeremy “Big Cat” Galley worked the final two innings and secured his second save of the season to give Howe Sound the 7-2 win.
“It’s nice to get back in the win column,” Wishy said. “We have been getting good pitching all year. Hopefully that big seventh sparks the struggling offence a bit here going forward.”
Howe Sound got more good news when they learned that fan favourites “Big Daddy” Kraz and “Hammer” Magee have been cleared to return to the lineup after missing the early part of the season.
The Cannons’ record stands at four wins and two losses and they return to action on Saturday (May 31) with a pair of games in North Vancouver against the Vancouver Cardinals and then the Deep Cove Brewers.
Howe Sound returns to Laroy Watt field on June 7 and June 14 with a pair of doubleheaders. First pitch for both home games is set for noon.
