The Cannons has a small break before hitting the field again.

The Howe Sound Cannons offence finally exploded in North Shore Men’s Baseball Association (NSMBA) action at Laroy Watt field on Saturday (June 21).

The top of the batting order for the Cannons collected nine of the team’s 11 hits in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the North Vancouver Blue Jays, en route to a 8-3 win.

Matty Taylor, Jack Thompson, “Big Daddy” Kraz and Jeremy Galley all produced multi-hit games in the win. Starting pitcher Kevin Smilie was solid on the mound, pitching a complete game to earn his second win of the year.

Game 2 was more of the same for the Cannons, as the team had a six-run first inning buoyed by a bases-clearing double by Tyler “Hammer” Magee to cruise to a 7-5 win.

Magee and Kraz recorded three RBIs apiece in the victory and starting pitcher Jeremy Galley went the distance, recording seven strikeouts in the win.

Howe Sound improved to nine wins and five losses in NSMBA action on the year and remain in second place in the league.

The Cannons have the Canada Day long weekend off but return to action the following weekend in North Vancouver at the Annual Dave Day Classic from July 4 to 6. Howe Sound has won the tournament the past six years but Wishy said it will be tough.

“The league is a lot tougher this year,” he said. “Teams have picked up talented players and they want to beat us badly.”
