Low numbers don't faze local riders at downhill race

Despite the phenomenal weekend weather, the busy weekend proved too much for Flow, the Downhill race as numbers were well below what was expected. The downhill race which was part of the Gear Jammer weekend only saw five riders compete for prizes and bragging rights.Trent Scarlett of Whistler finished in five minutes and 32 seconds, a personal best for the Half Nelson trail.According to Race director Dave Gillie, the lack of participation didnt change the atmosphere or the attitude of the riders. We were expecting somewhere between 30 and 40 people but due to the business of the weekend with Whistlers happening and Nationals going on numbers were down. However, we had a strong showing with some of the top racers in town coming out to support us and we had a good ride, the trail was in amazing condition, said Gillie.Gillie is optimistic that next year things will be different, with a few changes and a few tweaks the race can be a great success.Next year well try again and try not competing with Crankworx, I think that will make a big difference, Ill try to change it up again, Im always looking for something new, a new idea to get people excited, he said.Despite the low participation, the event still counts towards the Hell of a Series overall point standings with all five riders receiving points for their finish. The race may not have had the numbers it hoped for, but the riders who did participate treated it like any other race and put on a good show. Were not about making money, were just about giving riders what they want; just having some fun, a nice race, and a great trail, said Gillie.
