It was almost the perfect last home game for Anthony Wuster.
The Howe Sound Sounders running back and kick-off return specialist scored four touchdowns in the first quarter to give Howe Sound a 27-0 lead over the Moscrop Panthers that it never surrendered.
"That was a really nice way to finish it all up," he said. "I felt really good from the start of the game and found a lot of holes."
It almost wasn't worth the drive up to ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappfor the Panthers, who had to forfeit the game after the second quarter. Several Panther players suffered injuries during the first half and the team conceded the win to Howe Sound after halftime.
According to Sounders head coach Jim Errington, both quarterbacks for Moscrop were banged up and couldn't return. The Panthers finished the first half using a wide receiver at quarterback and conceded the game during halftime.
The Sounders were originally scheduled to take on the Frank Hurt Hornets in their opening-round playoff game but Frank Hurt had a win taken away after it was discovered that the team had used ineligible players. Moscrop was bumped up but league officials asked the Howe Sound coaching staff if it wanted a bye and a chance to move on to the next round. Wuster said he was pleased they agreed to invite Moscrop to Howe Sound field.
"I really was happy we got to play them," he said. "This might sound cocky but I knew we had a better chance of beating Moscrop than Frank Hurt and it was a good chance for all the graduating guys to get one more win at home."
Howe Sound dominated on the ground, with Wuster picking up 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Wuster's longest run was an impressive 80-yard score on the Sounders' first drive. The Sounders also completely stopped the Panthers' run, leaving them with -7 yards rushing on 17 carries. Moscrop grabbed 65 yards passing but Howe Sound's defence stopped them in the red zone on the Panthers' first drive, when they were threatening to score. Jordan Gosteli led the way defensively with five tackles, with Rory Baldwin picking up four. Gosteli also had a team-best three sacks and recovered a fumble. The team's other touchdown was also scored by Wuster, who scampered home 70 yards on a punt return.
With the win, the Sounders move on to the final four and will travel to Victoria next week to take on the Belmont Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were the top team in the Tier 2 Island Conference and went undefeated in the regular season, sporting a record of five wins and no losses. Howe Sound played an exhibition game against the Bulldogs last year, with Belmont beating Howe Sound 27-6 on Oct. 8, 2010.
The Sounders will take on Belmont on Friday (Nov. 18) at 4:30 p.m. For more information on B.C. High School Football, visit www.bchighschoolfootball.com.
