The fields at Brennan Park had been invaded by hundreds of soccer players from all over the province, but inside the local recreation centre, it was all about lacrosse.
The second annual Lacrosse Jamboree took over the community hall and lobby on Sunday (April 22) and lacrosse organizer Sonya Glover said it was a good showing for the upstart sport.
"It went really well," she said. "We definitely appreciate the space here at Brennan Park and had about 20 to 30 kids coming and going all afternoon."
Glover said kids took part in several drills run by female lacrosse stars Naomi and Nicki Walser, had a shot accuracy contest, a hardest shot contest measured by a police radar gun and finished the afternoon with a scrimmage.
"I thought it was a great event and it was nice to see some of the same kids returning from last year," said Naomi Walser. "We also helped out at the spring break camp out here last month and a lot of those kids came to this event. Just to see that type of progression in such a short time is really encouraging."
Walser said the local house league in ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappshould provide a great opportunity for young lacrosse enthusiasts in town.
"It would be a really good thing out here, especially for the younger players," said the North Shore Indians star. "I've noticed a couple of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappkids in leagues in the Lower Mainland so the talent is here. It could be a way to build a nice young core of lacrosse players."
Glover agreed with Walser, noting that local product Tucker Reed has joined a rep team in North Vancouver. She added that the Monday lacrosse league is all ready to go and the kids are looking forward to it.
Starting on May 14, the league will see younger kids hit the floor at Brennan Park from 4 to 5 p.m. and older kids from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Glover hopes for four teams for the younger group, with two teams for the older kids. Games will likely be half-court to accommodate more players at once.
The group signed up 11 new players on Sunday and will accept new players until the league kicks off. For more information on local lacrosse contact Glover at [email protected] or visit the group's Facebook page by typing "ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappLacrosse" into the search bar.
