The second edition of the Tenderfoot Boogie brought out a few dozen long-distance runners who had their choice of three lengthy routes between ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappand Whistler on Saturday (Aug. 6), starting at the Adventure Centre and ending at Whistler's Meadow Park Sports Centre.
The 50-mile Ultra race put competitors through a distance equal to nearly two full marathons.
Vancouver's Michael LeBlanc came through with an impressive time of eight hours, 27 minutes and 40 seconds to take top spot. Larry Buchanan of Portland, Ore. also crossed the line in less than nine hours with his time of 8:51:44. North Vancouver's Suzanne Johnson clocked in at 10:54:53 as the top female and third overall.
Whistler's Ashley McMillan had a huge gap over the rest of the field while taking first place in the 50-kilometre Endurance division, as he was nearly 80 minutes clear of the nearest competitor with a time of 5:53:00. The Endurance race start line was at the Tenderfoot Hatchery in the Paradise Valley. The battle for the next two positions was relatively close, with Vancouver resident David Crerar (7:11:31) beating out fellow Vancouverite Joel Montane (7:15:27) for the runner-up spot. Kamloops runner Tod Cooper (7:25:09) wasn't too far off the pace in fourth.
Local runner Mark Schmidt won the Lightning 28-km race by finishing the run from Brandywine Falls in 3:02:25. Rounding out the top three among the men, South Surrey's Paul Mathias finished in 3:16:23. Whistler resident Hannah Garcia was the top women's entrant and placed second overall with her time of 3:12:43, with Squamish's Alison Abell placing second in 3:49:56.
