Fourteen years ago Coun. Bryan Raiser had the idea to hold what he calls “the best bike event the world has ever seen” as a way to raise money for ƵappSearch and Rescue, get freeriders to join SORCA and introduce social rides to SORCA. Many agreed this was a good idea, pitched in and so Beyond the Valleycliffe of the Dolls (BVOD) was born.
Over the years much has changed. Freeride is now called enduro, SORCA social rides have become regular, and “apparently event insurance never actually covered Double Dog Daring someone to huck oneself down a cliff. Who knew?” Raiser said.
What hasn’t changed is the focus on fun and ƵappSearch and Rescue’s desperate need for funding.
Organizer Terry Holland said he was stoked at how the day unfolded.
“A great group of ladies and gentlemen came out to ride bikes on a breathtakingly beautiful day and no one got hurt. The rock was dry, the after party beer was wet and the times were nothing short of epic as we raised some money for Search and Rescue – so yeah, it was perfect.”
Raiser said “the highest of high fives” were to be bestowed upon Mike Jones for cleaning the legendary five-point climb and Sid Slotegraaf who pinned it with style, finding big air where others only saw cliffs.
Organizers and participants alike were eager to throw appreciation at the sponsors who always go above and beyond “for this little event that could,” said Raiser, listing Nesters, Dakine, Galileo, Tantalus, Republic, The Ƶapp, ƵappIntegrated Health, Raisers Edge Copywriting, and Howe Sound Brew Company.
