Mountain Fest climbs into town

Five-day event features films, speakers and free events

Squamish is set to be invaded by climbers and outdoor lovers of all shapes and sizes at the ninth annual ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappMountain Festival starting on Wednesday (July 16) and running until Sunday (July 20).

The event celebrates climbing, bouldering and mountain culture, and features clinics, guest speakers, competitions, adventure films and so much more over the five days.

It all kicks off on Wednesday with a special ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappLocals Night at the Eagle Eye Theatre featuring guest speakers Marc-Andre Leclerc and Jeremy Smith. Films being shown on Wednesday include: Patagonia Dreamin’, The Lost Valley and The Last Great Climb. Also on Wednesday, the first 50 people to the show will receive a free Arc’Teryx branded beer mug with one free fill up. 

Action continues on Thursday (July 17) with the MEC Night of Adventure with guest speakers Chris Christie and Josh Lavigne. Films being shown are: Spirits of Asgaror, The Water Tower and High Tension. 

Indoor activity also takes place on Friday (July 18) with the Arc’Teryx Awesomeness Night with guests Jason Kruk, Paul McSorely and Jesse Huey. Films being shown include: Great Days, Thalay Sagar: India and Desert Ice. 

Tickets for each night are $18, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the shows getting underway at 7 p.m. 

Participants get some hands-on activity when the festival ramps up on Saturday (July 19). Climbing clinics occur at ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappJunction Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, with yoga happening at the park at 3 p.m. Saturday also features a tug-of-war event at 2:45 p.m. and dodgeball kicking off at 4:20 p.m.

Festival attendees can volunteer for a trail maintenance day on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or go to the trade fair at the park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Movies continue at the Eagle Eye Theatre on Saturday with films The Sufferist, Spice Girl and The Sensei scheduled to show. Special guest speakers Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold will then have a question and answer session following the films. 

Saturday concludes with the Where’s Waldo party at the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappAdventure Centre from 9 p.m. till late.

The climbing clinics, trade fair and yoga continue at the same times on Sunday, with the flashed dyno competition starting at noon. Sunday also features a matinee showing of the film Assault on El Capitan at the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappAdventure Centre at noon. For info visit www.squamishmountainfestival.com.
