Nice debut for Martin

Grade 8 student looking to future in cross-country running

The B.C. Secondary School Provincial Cross-Country Championships ended a little too early for Howe Sound Secondary student Stephanie Pawluck.

After finishing 12th in the North Shore Secondary Schools Open Zone Finals at Don Ross Secondary on Oct. 26, Pawluck moved on to the provincials, which took place in Kelowna on Friday (Nov. 4). But her trip to Kelowna was stopped short after discovering that a knee injury she had been struggling with was a fractured tibia.

For Grade 8 student Shondra Martin, it was a similar story. After a collision while playing soccer, Martin twisted her knee but persevered and travelled to Kelowna to challenge the field. Racing against students as old as 18, the 12-year-old fared well, finishing 190th in the field of 306 racers. She completed the 4.8-kilometre course in 20 minutes, 46.78 seconds.

About 26 competitors dropped out after dealing the with temperature below freezing and a challenging course. James Martin, Shondra's father, said it was impressive for his daughter just to qualify and she hopes to continue her success in the future.
