ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappcross-country runners Shondra Martin and Stephanie Pawluck are on their way to Kelowna after qualifying for the B.C. Secondary School Provincial Championships, which take place on Friday (Nov. 4).
The duo qualified after putting it all together at the North Shore Secondary Schools Open Zone Finals at Don Ross Secondary School on Oct. 26.
Despite suffering through shin splints and a knee injury, Pawluck powered her way through the 4.8-kilometre race, finishing 12th with a time of 22:15.
It was also an impressive first foray into secondary athletics for Martin, who finished 13th with a time of 22:23. At age 12, the Grade 8 student was the youngest competitor in the field of 93 females. When she hits the trail at the provincials, Martin will be among the youngest racers to ever compete.
Only the top 20 qualify for provincials but several other local females had strong runs. Grade 8 students Alex Wade and Makenna Bailey finished 38th and 42nd, respectively, Grade 9 student Claire Fromme placed 74th and Howe Sound's Sarah Lepine placed 83rd.
Rhys Verner was the top finisher in the men's race, narrowly avoiding qualifying for the provincials by finishing 22nd. Griffin Dare also had a nice run, finishing 25th in the 155-racer field. Other local finishers included: Sam Sherlock (40th), Cam Dare (45th), Quinn Moberg (46th), Jordan McCreanor (72nd), Domenic Wade (75th), Liam Johnston (104th) and Cody Wolfe (132nd).
