Women’s basketball team undefeated, men suffer first lost

The Quest Kermodes women’s basketball team’s strong start to the Pacwest regular season continued after a trip to Vancouver Island this weekend.

Quest picked up wins over the VIU Mariners on Friday, Nov. 14 and over the Camosun Chargers on Saturday, Nov. 15 to improve to a perfect five wins and no losses.

They knocked off the Mariners 64-51 on Friday and then defeated the Chargers 70-60 after shooting a sparkling 50 per cent from the field.

Shayna Cameron led the way on Saturday with 19 points and four rebounds, while Katrin Sandbichler stuffed the stat sheet again with 10 rebounds, five steals, four assists, four points and two blocks. Forward Aimee Johnston chipped in with 16 points in the win.

Quest held the Chargers to 36 per cent shooting and took over the game in the second half, outscoring Camosun 34-22. The Kermodes are tied with the Douglas College Royals for first in the Pacwest with the pair of wins.

The men’s team suffered its first loss of the year on Friday, falling 84-77 to the Mariners, but then bounced back to beat the Chargers 84-67 on Saturday.

Quest shot a remarkable 57 per cent from the field in the win and had balanced scoring with five players scoring double digits.

Dylan Kular scored a team-high 16 points in the win, with forward Mike Zayas-Duran adding 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and a block. The Kermodes held Camosun to 35 per cent shooting and rode a second quarter, in which they outscored the opposition 27-16, to victory.

The men’s team sits tied for second in the Pacwest with a record of four wins and one loss.

Quest returns to ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappfor the final set of games before the Winter Break, to take on the Capilano Blues on Friday (Nov. 21) and the Langara Falcons on Saturday (Nov. 22). Women’s games tip off at 6 p.m., with the men hitting the court at 8 p.m.
