What’s old is new again for the Howe Sound Sounders senior boys basketball team.
Just one year after stepping away from the team, longtime head coach Ron Roberts has returned behind the bench to again man the team.
But this time he’s bringing along a familiar face to help him out.
Former Sounder Pinder Dhindsa is joining Roberts as a coach for the team. Roberts coached Dhindsa for several years, including his 2005 graduation year.
HSSS athletic director Joel Harwood said it should be a good mix.
“He played for Ron, which is kind of cool,” he said. “Ron has coached a number of years and Pinder is going to transition in there with Ron in a supporting role.”
Harwood said the senior boys decided not to compete in the AA North Shore League (NSL) and will only play in the Sea to Sky League for 2014-15. NSL teams travel to Vancouver to play and Harwood said the seniors weren’t up for the commitment.
“I think it’s a matter of students only being able to do so much,” he said. “Playing in the NSL can be a big commitment and there is lots of travelling involved.”
Harwood said the team will play home and away games against teams from Pemberton and Whistler, and will also compete in exhibition games and tournaments against teams outside the Sea to Sky Corridor.
The Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) senior girls team is also playing in the Sea to Sky League and will be coached by Anthony Cadman.
The only HSSS team to play in the NSL is the junior boys squad coached by Max Roy. Harwood said they have a strong group of young players that could blossom in the coming years.
“They’re a very keen group and are well coached from their time at Don Ross,” he said.
Like the senior boys and girls, the junior girls are scheduled to play in the Sea to Sky League. Harwood said schedules are still being finalized, but games for all four teams should be kicking off in late November and run until March.
