Sirens pumped for debut bout

Nautical Annihilation set to invade Brennan Park Arena

The Sea to Sky Sirens roller derby team continues to prepare for their debut bout in ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapplater this month and became a little more familiar with Brennan Park Arena during the teams first of four open scrimmages on Sunday (May 29).

Unfortunately, several players were sick or injured and only a total of three Sirens had the chance to hit the floor. However, they got to take part in a scrimmage with a number of huge collisions, thanks to the attendance of enthusiastic members from other derby teams.

A couple of our girls had some injuries from our game on Saturday (May 28) but we need better attendance, said Kristi Roxie Shocker Anderson. We only had three Sirens able to play today but weve had players from Chillwack, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver come join us and I think its gone pretty well.

Teams were split into two separate squads and the game was timed and officiated exactly like a regular roller derby bout. The intense pace of the game saw team allegiances thrown out the window as Anderson was rocked by Sirens teammate Shannon Mala Justed Handley several times, but harboured no ill will toward her teammate.

We always give it our all out there, she said. But I think my back is going to hurt in the morning.

Anderson said that any experience is good for the Sirens, who still need to become more familiar with the sport as a team.

Its really good for us just to get out there and learn, she said. Its all about learning and having fun. I think we need to work together more as a team and just spend more time as a team. Chemistry is whats needed and I dont think weve found our derby wives yet.

Anderson pointed out that a derby wife is a teammate who always has your back during the bout no matter what.

Its also a learning experience for the referees. Coun. Bryan Raiser, who will be a local ref, admitted to being a little overwhelmed with the rule book and all the hand gestures he needs to memorize by the time of the big bout.

It was really a baptism by fire out there, he joked. But I think roller derby coming to ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappis unbelievable. Were going to kill it and I cannot wait for the first bout.

Anderson agreed that the team is looking forward to Nautical Annihilation, which takes place on June 18.

Were pretty pumped, she said. Its going to be awesome.

She said Brennan Park will be transformed into a whole new arena for the Sirens bouts, with a beer garden and live bands playing during intermission. Fans can sit in the safety of the stands or in the suicide seats, which are located on the floor.

The team will have another open scrimmage on June 12 and Anderson said the team is always looking for volunteers for game day operations and new recruits for the team.
