The Howe Sound Sounders football team ended the regular season on a high note with a 19-0 win over the Eric Hamber Griffins in Vancouver on Saturday (Oct. 26).
Sounders coach Jim Errington said his team's defence shone brightly.
"Defensively, it was the smartest and best game we've played to date," he wrote in an email. "The success of the defence was a result of how quick they moved on the snap. We were in their backfield before the handoff."
The Sounders created five turnovers and held the Griffins to less than 100 yards of offence. Jonathan Hamill, Mat Martins, Jerome Horsmans and Otis Geddes all stripped the ball from Griffins offensive players and Andrew Pelletier snagged an interception.
Defenders Adam Stangowitz, Hamill, Horsmans and Martins all recorded quarterback sacks.
Errington said the Griffins have improved a lot since earlier this season and said the Sounders had to battle for every yard offensively. Howe Sound had touchdowns from Stangowitz, Cam Dare and Scott Messier. Errington said Messier, the team's quarterback, was throwing the ball well but Sounders receivers had difficulty all game holding onto the ball.
The win concludes the regular season and Howe Sound finished with a record of four wins and three losses. Next up for the Sounders will be a playoff date against the Timberline Timberwolves in Campbell River on Saturday (Nov. 2).
Howe Sound defeated Timberline 19-6 in ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappon Sept. 21 but the Timberwolves then blanked the Sounders 12-0 on Oct. 5.
"There are no secrets between our two teams since we've played them twice this year," Errington said. "Timberline is the most physical team we've played."
The other Tier II playoff game features the undefeated Moscrop Panthers taking on Hamber. The winners of the two playoff games will move on to the Tier II final in Burnaby on Nov. 9.
