The Howe Sound Sounders capped a successful regular season by crushing the Argyle Secondary Pipers 42-8 on Saturday (Nov. 5).
The win puts the Sounders' record at four wins and one loss, which means they will get home-field advantage in the first round of the Tier 2 Playoffs.
Once again, it was Howe Sound's defence that put a stranglehold on the Pipers' offence. The Sounders allowed Argyle to pick up only 136 yards total offence and created four turnovers. Rory Baldwin and James Kyle picked up an interception each, with Cooper Bennink and Taylor Marshall recovering fumbles.
Kyle, along with Jordan Gosteli, led the way with six tackles apiece, while Griffin Dare grabbed the team's lone sack on the afternoon. Gosteli was named the defensive player of the game for his impressive tackle total.
The offence was also firing on all cylinders, picking up 247 yards total, including more than 200 on the ground. Offensively, Swo-wo Gabriel, who was named the offensive player of the game and picked up 89 yards rushing, led the Sounders. Anthony Wuster also had a strong game, rushing for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle scored three touchdowns of his own, including two rushing scores and one off of an interception. Dare caught the team's lone touchdown pass and led the way with two catches for 17 yards receiving.
Next up for the Sounders will be another date with archrivals the Frank Hurt Hornets. The Hornets eliminated Howe Sound from the playoffs last year but this year the Sounders exacted a little revenge, beating Frank Hurt 34-16 on Oct. 15.
The winner of the Sounders-Hornets game will then move on to play the winner of the Belmont-Edward Milne semifinal the following week, with the provincial champions being crowned on the last weekend in November.
Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 12) at Howe Sound field. For more information on B.C. High School Football, visit www.bchighschoolfootball.com.
