It was yet another busy weekend for local riders at races all across Western Canada.
Neal Kindree continued his strong summer, putting in a good showing at the Canadian Mountain Bike Nationals in Canmore on July 16 and 17.
He placed fourth in the Elite Men's division, finishing the 35.5-kilometre course 4:40 behind race winner Max Plaxton. Kindree also fared well in the relay race on Team B.C., which finished third. Also on Team B.C. was Team ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappmember Quinn Moberg, Evan Guthrie and Mical Dyck. It was the first time since 2002 that relays made an appearance at the event and organizers expect it to return for 2012.
Brackendale's Brandi Heisterman also had a strong showing at the event, coming seventh in a very competitive Elite Women's field.
"I broke my finger on the first of four laps and tried to claw my way back into top five," she told The Chief in an email. "On the third lap, I crashed again and my wheel came off but I still managed to pull off seventh."
Several local junior riders also competed in the Junior divisions with mixed results. Lauren Rosser placed sixth in the Junior Women's division, while the Junior Men's saw Mo Lawrence place 10th, Quinn Moberg finish 15th and Nicholas Bruce ended up 19th.
A little closer to home, Squamish's Miranda Miller had a strong finish at the Canadian Open in Whistler on July 17 at Crankworx. Miller finished in third place in the Pro Women's category with a time of 3:50.75. The event was won by Great Britain's Rachel Atherton, with Whistler's Claire Buchar placing second. She followed that up with another third place showing at the Garbanzo Downhill, which also took place at Crankworx on Tuesday (July 19).
Squamish's Kyle Quesnel also excelled at Crankworx, winning the Senior Amateur Men's division in the Dual Slalom competition on Saturday (July 16) with a total time of 48.73.
Local riders will continue their seasons next week in various locations. Moberg, Bruce and Lawrence will travel to Edmonton to compete in a Canada Cup race. Team ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappmembers Mason Moberg, Miller and Rosser will all be heading to Panorama for Nationals and Canada Cup, and Kindree will be competing in the Gearjammer at home on July 23.
