ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappnative Dalton Thrower continues to impress in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and his efforts were recognized by the league when he was named the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) player of the week for Dec. 27 to Jan. 1.
Thrower picked up 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in four games and helped lead the Saskatoon Blades to victory in two of the contests.
On Dec. 27, Thrower picked up one assist in a 7-2 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings and was then held pointless on Dec. 29 in a 5-2 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders. But Thrower exploded on home ice against the Raiders on Dec. 30, picking up two goals and four assists in a 9-4 Saskatoon win. The rearguard added four more points in an 8-2 win on Jan. 1 against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Thrower now ranks ninth in the WHL among all defencemen in scoring with 30 points (seven goals, 30 assists) in 39 games. He is the first defenceman to claim the CHL player of the week honour this season. The Blades, who dominated the WHL during last year's regular season, have had a bit of an up-and-down year and sit in sixth place in the WHL's Eastern Conference.
Last season, the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappnative helped lead the Blades to victory against the Vancouver Giants at Pacific Coliseum but Saskatoon will not make the trip to B.C. this season. Back on Nov. 26, the Giants traveled to Saskatoon and picked up a 4-1 victory.
According to TSN's Draftcentre blog, Thrower, who is NHL draft eligible this year, is the 58th-ranked player in the draft and is poised to be selected in the first two rounds at the June event.
