Cerys Richards and Tanya Fearon scored first-half goals as Squamish's U12 girls travel soccer team defeated Whistler FC 2-1 in the final of the North Shore Community Cup tournament on Sunday (March 4) at Brennan Park.
ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappUnited finished its season with 22 wins, four losses and one tie in all competitions, including 15-0-1 to win the North Shore Diadora Division regular-season title. After going 4-4 in two preseason tournaments last summer, the team was unbeaten in its final 19 games, with its lone tie having come last September.
In the second minute of play on Sunday, team captain Madison Cartwright struck a hard free kick from outside the Whistler penalty box. Whistler FC's goalkeeper stopped the shot but could not hold onto the ball and Richards pounced on the rebound and scored.
In the 16th minute, Fearon - playing in her first game back after missing the previous two months with a broken collarbone - ran onto a through pass from Cartwright at the top of the penalty area. Fearon calmly pushed a right-footed shot past the charging goalie and into the net.
ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappUnited had several other good scoring chances but failed to convert. United goalie Eliza Wilson turned aside a couple of Whistler scoring chances. Whistler averted the shutout in the game's dying seconds when Squamish's defence couldn't clear the ball after a Whistler corner kick and it bounced into the goal.
Aside from Cartwright, Richards, Fearon and Wilson, the team was comprised of Mya Baxter, Linnea Burke, Breanne DeCook, Paige Fanzone, Maya Heikoop, Lily Jarrett, Lauren Petryshen, Katie Tone, Jazmyn Williams and Breanna Wolfe.
Storm upsets CCBFC United
Scarlett Stewart scored off a pass from Kei Gray in the first half and the U13 ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappStorm girls travel team beat CCFCB United 1-0 on Sunday in Cloverdale, handing CCBFC its first loss in the final game of the regular season.
CCBFC (Central City Breakers Football Club) United has dominated play in the B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League Gold 1 Division, going 13-1-2 and scoring 55 goals to opponents' 11. CCBFC defeated the Storm 6-1 and 3-1 in two previous meetings.
On Sunday, though, the Storm - which finished third in the league - put forth a strong all-around effort and handed CCBFC its first shutout of the season. Goalie Madi Doyle recorded the shutout.
"It was an all-round great team effort and everyone elevated their game," Storm assistant coach Chris Doyle wrote in an email. "There was lots of battling for the ball in the midfield. They came out strong at the beginning of the second [half] and had several corner kicks. We withstood the onslaught and played them tough for the remainder."
The Storm, coached by Brent Williston and Doyle, resumes play with the provincial cup knock-out tournament in late March.
