ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappresident Ty Woodard was still awestruck moments after getting the chance to skate alongside the Vancouver Giants during the Western Hockey League (WHL) team's warm-up and playing of the national anthem on Sunday (Feb. 19).
The ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappScreaming Eagles H4 defenceman had lady luck on his side, winning a random draw among his teammates to join the Giants. Each player had to write a short note about why that player should hit the ice and Woodard said it was a fun experience.
"It was really good out there," he said, admitting he's never been on the ice in front of more than 6,000 people before. "Being beside Brendan Gallagher for the anthem singing was my favourite part."
But the excitement didn't stop for Woodard and his team, as they were invited to play during the first intermission. The team was split into two teams, with half wearing green jerseys and half wearing white jerseys. The white team managed to pick up the narrow 1-0 victory to the delight of thousands checking out the game during intermission.
The night was all part of a fundraiser for the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappMinor Hockey Association (SMHA). Local volunteers were selling 50/50 tickets throughout the evening and proceeds from the draw will go towards the SMHA.
