Don Ross Secondary School (DRSS) student Wayne Yang jumped to greatness at the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo this past weekend.
The Grade 8 student was the lone ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappparticipant at the event and he grabbed a silver in the boys pole vault and a fourth-place showing in the boys triple jump.
Yang’s silver medal was one of 125 medals won by the Vancouver-ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappteam, which finished in third place in the medal standings behind the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island/Central Coast teams at the event.
The performance continues his momentum in jumping events after he placed third in the province at the Grade 8 boys triple jump event back in June.
Yang wasn’t the only young ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappathlete who had a good weekend as Team ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapprider Sean Fincham fared well at the Canadian XC Nationals event in Ontario on Saturday (July 19).Â
Fincham finished third in the U17 men division with a time of 54:28. He was milliseconds out of second place and about one minute and 50 seconds behind winner Quinton Disera from Ontario.Â
Fincham’s teammate Ethan Toom also had a strong showing in the U17 race, with a seventh-place showing, completing the course with a time of 57:09. Also making the trip to Ontario was Squamish’s Quinn Moberg, who placed 26th in the U23 men division.
Meanwhile, Squamish’s Harry Head continued his solid season on the downhill scene with a sixth-place finish at the fourth B.C. Cup race of the season at Sun Peaks on Sunday (July 20). He finished 10 seconds out of first place and continues his season next weekend in Golden with B.C. Cup Race 5.Â
