BMX riders converged on ƵappMonday evening at the local track for a last chance to run up points for provincial rankings.

The local event followed a run of other provincial series races over the weekend in communities like Langley, the North Shore, Pemberton and Whistler.
For a ranking, they need to compete in at least four provincial series races as well as the finals.

“This is the last chance for a lot of these riders,” BMX president Vicki Schenk said.

She estimated the event attracted about 85 riders from around B.C., with many from the Ƶapparea. Other riders came from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Interior. They will be aiming for the provincials next month in Pemberton.

The riders are grouped according to age but also based on levels from novice through intermediate and finally expert.

There were many key matchups Monday night, with some stretching right back through the weekend races in other communities.

In the 13 boys expert category, the contests typically came down to Jeremy Pope from Garibaldi Highlands and Pemberton’s Chris Beaton.

Schenk said the two riders had been trading places in heats throughout the weekend.

“The best thing is they’re still buddies,” she said.
