Sports shorts: Swimmers strong in Langley

SwimFaster meet SwimFaster sent 16 swimmers to the Langley 10 th Annual Invitational Swim Meet this weekend. Fourteen teams and more than 350 swimmers in all took part in the meet. Seven SwimFaster members moved on to the finals.

SwimFaster meet

SwimFaster sent 16 swimmers to the Langley 10th Annual Invitational Swim Meet this weekend.

Fourteen teams and more than 350 swimmers in all took part in the meet. Seven SwimFaster members moved on to the finals. Results were:

Laura Toschi, 200 free (2nd), 400 free (3rd), 100 back (3rd), 200 back (5th) and 400 IM (7th); Alexia Morgans, 200 fly (4th); Yannick Morgans, 200 fly (5th), 400 IM (5th), 100 fly (8th); Analiese Aalhus, 50 free (6th); Jeffrey Zhou, 100 breast (6th); Diane McIllwraith, 100 back (7th); Ximena Diaz, 100 breast (7th).

Several other members swam best times: Aleksa  Cakalj, Dilay Aykut, Hailey Gagne, Anja Gunnsteinsdottir, Sara Gunnsteinsdottir, Caitlin Lichimo, Max Ndlovu-Fraser, Kefryn Johnson, Sara Ndlovu-Fraser.

Sounders football

Howe Sound Secondary gave up yards early to the Spectrum Thunder on Nov. 5 and it cost them, as they lost 13-8.

Spectrum scored on its first drive, which included a 49-yard run. Howe Sound then drove up the ball upfield but fumbled in the red zone. Spectrum took over and again moved downfield with a long run to set up their second touchdown.

In all, the Sounders surrendered 160 yards on Spectrum’s first three plays but settled down to give up only 47 the rest of the way. Karl Wiegand recovered a fumble, while Hayden Taylor had a sack.

On the offence, the team racked up 270 yards, with Lukas Nering rushing for 148 yards and adding seven from a reception. It was his sixth game with more than 100 yards rushing.

The team could not find the end zone though, except for Alex Schultheiss’s 14-yard run for a touchdown. Nering added the two-point conversion.

The team plays its last game of the regular season Thursday afternoon when it hosts Eric Hamber at Howe Sound Secondary. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.

Hitmen win

Even with the bare 11 players in the lineup for the third week in a row, the Howe Sound Hitmen beat the Falcons 26-0 on Sunday.

Josh “Frogger” De Cerna, Every Drury each scored a touchdown while Reniel Belandres had two majors. Kolby Wilton added two conversions.

The Hitmen have a hold on third place and will finish the regular season facing the Vikings on Sunday. If they win, they will face the Westside Warriors in the first round of the playoffs.

Quest beats Clan

The Quest men’s basketball team beat SFU, now playing in NCAA Division II, in an exhibition game Saturday. Final score was 100-76.

Guard Theo VandenEkart led all scorers with 35 points, including seven three-pointers. Dallas Searles added 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a block, while Daniel Canzater had a double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Paul Getz also scored in double figures, with a dozen points and six rebounds.

In league play, the Kermodes also beat CBC 77-68 Friday night. Searles scored 31 points and added 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals.

The women’s team also beat CBC 59-39, with Emily Lachenmayer leading the team with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

The men’s and women’s team host VIU on Friday and Camosun on Saturday afternoon. The women tip off at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., to be followed by the men’s games at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m.
