ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappcleans up at Sunshine Coaster

Moberg, Fincham, Jones and Christie all win XC divisions

The sun was shining on several ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappriders at the annual Sunshine Coaster mountain biking event on Sunday (May 3).

Squamish’s Quinn Moberg put an exclamation mark on the weekend with a win in the Elite Men cross-country marathon race. Moberg, who finished the race in 2:28:38, beat out Sechelt’s Kris Sneddon by seven seconds to capture the first-place crown.

It’s the first ever win in the Elite Men’s division for Moberg after placing second at last year’s Sunshine Coaster. Squamish’s Greg Day also fared well at the race, placing fourth and clocking in at 2:33:24.

Meanwhile, it was a ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappsweep in the Junior Men’s XC short distance. Sean Fincham, Rhys Verner and Luke Di Marzo finished first, second and third respectively. Fincham blazed through the course in 1:07:55, Verner finished in 1:10:26 and Di Marzo clocked in at 1:14:51.

There was also a ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappsweep in the U17 Men XC short distance. Holden Jones, Hunter Verner and Nick Kleban grabbed the top three spots. Jones finished in 1:16:06, Verner in 1:17:33 and Kleban at 1:20:40.

Also winning his XC division in XC races was Chris Christie in the 40-plus men’s XC marathon.

Other locals with strong showings included: Chloe Moberg (second, U17 women’s XC short), Michaela Hoskin (second, U15 women’s XC short), Cameron Fielding (third, U15 men's XC short), Eric Goodwin (third, 30-plus XC marathon), Jhett Verner (fourth, U15 men’s XC short), Parker Mell (fifth, U17 XC short), Jean-Sebastien Lareau (seventh, 30-plus men’s XC marathon) and Sean Buck (31st, 40-plus men’s XC marathon).

ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappriders also fared well in the downhill races, with Jessie McAuley winning first place in the U17 men’s division on Sunday. McAuley beat out second-place rider Jacob Stefiuk from North Vancouver by just under one second.

Also competing in the senior men’s division was Squamish’s Nick Barreau, who placed 12th with a time of 3:18.74.
