ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapprider wins The Gryphon

Verner wins pro men division as Enduro series returns

The ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappEnduro series returned to local trails with the return of The Gryphon on Saturday (May 23).

Course details for The Gryphon weren’t released until May 21 but the five stages saw riders battle it out on Made in the Shade, Rupert, Entrails, Icy Hole of Death and Crouching Squirrel to Kiki’s.

Each stage was timed and the event drew riders of all skill levels to the trails.

Squamish’s Rhys Verner won the pro men’s division with a cumulative time of 13:02, beating out Whistler’s Shane Gayton by 27 seconds. Verner won three of the five stages, with Matt Ryan winning the other two.

Whistler’s Leonie Picton won the pro women division, posting a cumulative time of 15:35 and winning four of five stages. Whistler’s Sarah Leishman was the only other rider to win a stage.

Despite not winning a single stage, Squamish’s Jack Cormack posted strong showings at each stage to post the fastest time in the junior men division. Cormack had three second-place finishes, a third and a fifth to win the division.

Stage winners included: Squamish’s Kasper Woolley (two) and Squamish's Jessie McAuley (three).

Other division winners at the event included: Whistler’s Christina Chappetta (open women), Squamish’s Pat Foster (open men), Squamish’s Tamsin Mills (master’s women) and Squamish’s Domenic Scorda (master’s men).

The next race in the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappEnduro series is the women’s only Hot On Your Heels race on July 25. The event is a fundraiser for the Go Girls! Healthy Bodies Healthy Mind program and features women only on the trails and men only as the race volunteers.
