Local runners earn six division titles at youth triathlon

Kids battle it out in the bike transition stage at the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappYouth Triathlon on Sunday (May 11).

This past Sunday, May 10 may have been Mother’s Day but for most of the morning in Squamish, it was all about the kids.

The annual ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappYouth Triathlon took over Brennan Park with a total of 175 solo athletes and 11 teams of all ages swimming, running and cycling their way to success.

It turned out to be a banner day for a number of ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappracers, with several young athletes finishing in the top three in their division.

Squamish’s Avery Krumme posted the top time in the female seven and under division, completing the course in an even 10 minutes. She beat Squamish’s Sydney Cramb and North Vancouver’s Alexia Morgans to earn the top spot.

Squamish’s Elly Hoskin improved on her third place finish in last year’s female 10 to 11 division to win in 2015 with a time of 26:10. Hoskin edged out Erin Husken and North Vancouver’s Olivia Adams for the win. 

Local females also dominated in the 12 to 13 division, with Linnea Uunila earning bragging rights with a time of 40:07. She beat Whistler’s Kaila Lafreniere and Squamish’s Michaela Hoskin to finish first.

Squamish’s Rafi Abolfathi won the male 14 to 15 division, posting a time of 46:45 to take home top prize. Whistler’s Jack McColl placed second, and Squamish’s Ryan Blasak finished third.

Other local athletes to win their divisions included: Tara Abolfathi (female 14 to 15) and Brandon Cheal (male 16-plus).

ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµappracers who earned podium finishes included: Arya Schoahs (second, female 8 to 9), Zeb Parker (second, male 12 to 13), Findlay Henderson (second, male seven and under), Tommy Lafreniere (second, male eight to nine), Spencer Wardle (third, male seven and under), Hadley Todd (third, female eight to nine), Levi Karasz (third, male eight to nine), Rylan Armstrong (third, male 10 to 11) and Colin Chatfield (third, male 12 to 13).

Other division winners included: Cael Eley (male 7 and under), Vancouver’s Madeleine Wardle (female 8 to 9), Coquitlam’s Timur Sorokin (male 8 to 9), Whistler’s Felix Shorter (male 10 to 11) and Whistler’s Skylar Beauregard (male 12 to 13).

Winners in the relay divisions included: The Lightning Bolts (7 and under), Kaian Fieldhouse (8 to 9), Soccer Sisters (10 to 11) and The Terminators (12 to 13).
