It’s been a successful 2014-15 season for the ƵappSkating Club (SSC) and there’s one more opportunity to add more medals to the team’s trophy case.
The final event for the Super Series, in which the SSC competes, occurs in Parksville from April 10 to 12, and a number of the best and brightest local figure skaters are hitting the ice.
SSC coach Kari-Ann MacDonald said 16 of the club’s skaters are making the trip to Parksville and that it’s been a great year of development for the club.
“We’ve been very impressed with everyone’s performances,” she said, adding that earlier Super Series competitions saw several SSC members pick up medals. “Everyone’s performances have improved so much since the start of the year.”
Competitions from earlier this year saw several standouts earn medals including: Tess Thompson (senior girls: gold – February, senior girls: silver – March), Elizabeth McIllwraith (senior girls: silver – February), Diane McIllwraith (Star 4 girls U13: bronze – February), Gabby Duarte (Star 4 girls 13+: silver – February, Star 4 girls 13+: gold – March) and Jacob Neubauer (Star 4 boys: silver – March).
The high-level SSC competitors train year-round, but usually have to move to Vancouver to train in the spring and summer as the ice in Brennan Park is removed starting on April 30.
MacDonald added that in the month of April the SSC is offering a discounted “Learn to Skate” month for beginners or those who want to return to training. She said the club has limited supply of skates and helmets to lend out for the CanSkate program. For more details on the programs call 604-848-1249 or email the club at [email protected].
